Want to know my secret for the best beef and broccoli sauce?
It’s oyster sauce!!
Most B&B(beef and broccoli) recipes use soy sauce as the main base but oyster sauce gives more umami flavor. But if you don’t have any or don’t eat it, you can sub it with: soy sauce, tamari, or vegan oyster sauce!
Let’s get cookin’!
Ingredients!
For the Sauce:
- 6 tablespoons oyster sauce ( or soy sauce, tamari, vegan oyster sauce)
- 3 cloves garlic, minced or grated
- 1/2 teaspoon or more fresh ginger, grated. *I love ginger so I grate a 2 inch piece*
- 2 tablespoons sesame oil
- 1 1/2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar (optional, for a hint of sweetness)
- 1/2 cup hot water
For the Stirfry:
- 1 pound (450g) beef sirloin or flank steak, thinly sliced
- 3 cups broccoli florets (about 1 medium-sized broccoli)
- 1 onion thinly sliced
- 3 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided
- Sesame seeds and sliced green onions for garnish (optional)
- Cooked white rice, for serving
Instructions
1. Prepare the Beef:
- Start by slicing the beef into thin strips. To make this task easier, place the beef in the freezer for about 30 minutes before slicing. This helps firm it up and allows for cleaner cuts.
- Or! Buy the beef already precut if available at your grocery store.
2. Mix the Sauce:
- In a bowl, combine all the sauce ingredients listed above. Stir well until the cornstarch dissolves and there are no lumps. This sauce will be the key to the dish’s delicious flavors.
3. Blanch the Broccoli:
- Bring your skillet or wok to medium high heat and add 1 tablespoon of oil and the the broccoli florets along with 1/4 cup hot water and cover with lid. In abut 2 minutes they’ll turn bright green. Remove the lid and stir fry for 1 minute. Remove and set aside.
4. Sauté the Beef and Aromatics:
- Heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the onions and sautee for 1-2 minute until they begin to turn translucent. Now, add the sliced beef and cook for 2-3 minutes, or until it’s browned and cooked through.
5. Combine the Ingredients:
- Add the broccoli to the skillet, and pour the prepared sauce over everything. Stir well to coat the beef and broccoli evenly with the sauce. Let the sauce thicken for about 1 minute. If the sauce is too thick, you can add more beef broth or water to achieve the desired consistency.
6. Final Touches:
- Let the beef and broccoli simmer in the sauce for an additional 1-2 minutes until everything is heated through and the flavors meld together beautifully.
7. Serve:
- Remove the skillet from the heat and garnish the dish with sesame seeds and sliced green onions if desired. Serve the Beef and Broccoli stir-fry hot over steamed white rice and enjoy this delish and nutritious meal!
Bon Apetit!
