If you’re craving an authentic Cuban sandwich experience, the Croqueta Preparada is a must-try. This delightful sandwich combines crispy croquettes, savory cheese, tangy pickles, and a mouthwatering Cuban aioli, all nestled in a fresh ciabatta roll. Follow this simple recipe to create your own Cuban Croquette Sandwich at home.
The Croqueta Preparada is a Cuban croquette sandwich that offers a delicious twist on the traditional Cuban sandwich. Growing up with a Cuban father, I often enjoyed this savory treat. They are very nostalgic to me and always bring back fond memories. Similar to the classic Cuban sandwich, the Croqueta Preparada adds an extra layer of crunch and savory goodness with the fried croquettes, making it an irresistible treat for anyone looking to experience the delicious flavors of Cuban cuisine.
These mouthwatering Cuban croquette sandwiches are traditionally made on Cuban bread. Living in Hawaii, I haven’t been able to find Cuban bread here so I started to make mine on toasted Ciabatta which adds another level of crunch and is absolutely delicious! I also leveled up the traditional mayo by creating my own Cuban Aioli which combined some of my favorite flavors of Cuban Cuisine.
To simplify the sandwich making process I buy the Goya premade frozen ham croquettes at my local Target in the hispanic frozen food section. I fry them according to the instructions until they are crispy and golden brown. (I am not affiliated or paid to promote this product)
By incorporating these ingredients and steps, you’ll create a delicious and authentic Croqueta Preparada that brings a taste of Cuba right to your kitchen. Enjoy the process of making and savoring this incredible sandwich!

Instructions:
Prepare the Cuban Aioli
To start, make the Cuban aioli, which adds a burst of flavor to your Croqueta Preparada.
- Mix the Ingredients: In a small bowl, combine 4 tablespoons of mayonnaise with a splash of red wine vinegar. Add 1 grated garlic clove, 1/8 teaspoon of cumin, and 1/8 teaspoon of oregano. Stir well until all the ingredients are thoroughly mixed.
- Chill: Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 15 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.
Assemble the Cuban Croquette Sandwich
While your aioli is chilling in the fridge:
- Prepare the Croquettes: If you’re using store-bought croquettes, fry them according to the package instructions. For a homemade touch, you can prepare your own croquettes using your favorite recipe. Let cool on a paper towel to absorb the extra oil.
- Slice the Ciabatta Roll: Cut the ciabatta roll in half horizontally and lightly toast it if desired.
- Spread the Aioli: Generously spread the Cuban aioli on both halves of the ciabatta roll. This creamy and tangy aioli will enhance the flavors of the sandwich.
- Add Mustard: Spread a thin layer of mustard on one half of the ciabatta roll.
- Layer the Ingredients: Start by placing the cooked croquettes on the bottom half of the ciabatta roll. Add a slice of Swiss or provolone cheese on top of the croquettes. Next, add a few dill pickles for a delightful crunch and tang.
- Top and Serve: Place the top half of the ciabatta roll over the layered ingredients, pressing down gently to secure the sandwich. Serve immediately, while the croquettes are still warm and the cheese is melty.
Buen Provecho!
Tips for the Perfect Croqueta Preparada:
- Croquettes: For the best results, use Cuban-style croquettes, which are typically made with ham, chicken, or fish. You can find these in the frozen section of many grocery stores or make them from scratch for an authentic touch.
- Cheese: Swiss cheese provides a classic flavor, but provolone can be used for a slightly different taste.
- Pickles: Dill pickles add a refreshing crunch and tanginess that balances the richness of the croquettes and aioli.
- Ciabatta Roll: While a traditional Cuban sandwich uses Cuban bread, a ciabatta roll is a great alternative that is readily available and offers a nice texture.
